When Arne Slot was appointed as Liverpool's manager last summer, the prevailing perspective within the club at that time was that they were getting a manager (or head coach) whose style of play was analogous to that of the departing great Jürgen Klopp. Although there would be changes in how the team plays, the difference wouldn’t be significant enough for the players to make many adjustments.
This article focuses on the attacking numbers the Reds have produced this season, analysing the type of goals scored, shot attempt zones, set-piece over/under-performance, and more. For starters, Slot’s men are not only leading the league by 13 points but also top the goals scored chart by the same margin. They are on track to score 90 goals by the end of this league campaign — a tally Liverpool last reached in the 2021/22 season under Klopp.
After a significant dip in 2022/23 — for reasons well-known under Klopp — Liverpool's goal-scoring took a jump last season. However, in Slot's first season, the team is on course to surpass 90 league goals, a feat achieved only once during Klopp's full seasons in charge. While this is not the be-all and end-all, it is a good marker to start things off.
Up next, the focus shifts to the type of goals and whether there's been any change in the kinds of goals Liverpool are scoring this season compared to the past five seasons.
Although there is a 2% increase in the open play goal portion this season compared to last, it isn’t something massive to note. The visuals below will show if there have been any changes in the types of goals we're looking for.
Klopp’s team were predominantly good at scoring from corners and set-pieces. As seen in the visual above, in each of the last five seasons, more than 15% of the league goals have been from the aforementioned situations.
