With 229 out of the 380 Premier League games completed, we are entering the business phase of the season, where wins and points matter more in shaping the points table (an old cliche that people do not look at the points table until after November). At the moment, Liverpool are the best team in the country, with 53 points from 22 games. They are six points ahead of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand (the Merseyside derby away at Goodison Park).
What's more, the Reds have been flawless in the Champions League, winning all seven of their league-phase games. They are guaranteed to finish in the top two of the table, avoiding February's playoff games and marching straight to the last-16 stage.
This article focuses on teams from Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues, analysing where Liverpool stand in underlying and advanced metrics. Starting with the basics, we’ll gradually delve deeper to show that the Reds aren’t just the best domestically in England—they’re posting numbers that rank among the best in Europe’s elite.
Points per game (ppg) can be a subjective metric because we are looking at teams from different leagues playing against varying levels of opposition. However, we are past the halfway mark in the season, so any team in the league with over two ppg are doing very well. Liverpool are joint-third in this alongside Serie A’s leaders Napoli.
All the visuals below have numbers in per 90 form.
Not disrespecting the German and French leagues one bit, but the performance of their teams in Europe this season has got them sixth and seventh respectively in the UEFA Coefficients Ranking as of now (behind England, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Spain) for getting extra Champions League spots next season.
