Liverpool upgraded the quality in the summer but sacrificed on the depth
Arsenal added to the depth with their signings in the summer without selling any key player
Much has been made of Arne Slot’s comments about the lack of depth in his squad after he fielded what many considered a ‘weak’ side against Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
It is true that the Reds spent close to £430 million in the summer transfer window. While people are quick to point that out, they often forget to mention that the club recouped almost £200 million from player sales, with the potential for that figure to rise by a further £35 million if the Harvey Elliott clause is activated by Aston Villa before the next summer window even begins.
In contrast, title challengers Arsenal spent around £258 million during the summer window while recouping only £9 million from sales. Manchester City, following a busy January window in which they spent £190 million on five players, spent another £180 million in the summer while bringing in just £62 million from departures.
