Deep Dive on Jeremie Frimpong: Tactical Flexibility, Statistical Star & Comparisons to Conor Bradley

As I write this article, Liverpool are very close to signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong ahead of the opening of the first summer transfer window in June. The Dutch international has a €35 million release clause in his contract in Germany, which can be paid in four instalments. Given this - and the fact that he could be one of the ways the club replaces the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold - it makes sense on every level.

This further reinforces the idea that the club were aware of Alexander-Arnold’s departure well before the official announcement, which came last week. For that reason, they are now close to completing the signing of Frimpong even before the current season ends. It highlights both the swift work already done by the club and signals the pace at which they intend to operate in the transfer market.

There has been a consensus that Conor Bradley should be given precedence to succeed Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool next season and that the club do not need to sign a new full-back on that side. However, even though Bradley is a young player, he has missed quite a lot of games since the start of last season. The Northern Ireland international has missed 48 games for club and country since the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

This is no slight on Bradley, by the way. However, at a minimum, Liverpool will play 48 competitive matches next season (38 in the Premier League, eight in the Champions League league phase, and one each in the two domestic cup competitions). One would imagine they’ll progress in at least one or two of those cups, meaning the total number of games could well exceed 50. With that in mind, it’s understandable why the club are looking to have two high-quality right-backs - each offering a different playing style.

To proceed with the analysis, we will first focus on Frimpong’s numbers in the Bundesliga this season and go from there.

Different teams have different levels of possession, so pass count numbers are better compared among players when presented in a proportional format. I believe this and have shown it in the visual above.
