A data-based look at why Liverpool are relaxed about Luis Diaz’s future …

Written on 09/07/2025, six days after the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother (condolences to his family and close ones).

Luis Díaz has received numerous offers from the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona, with interest from the Saudi Pro League expected to emerge later in the transfer window. The Colombian’s contract at Liverpool runs until 2027, with the terms remaining the same as those he signed in January 2022 when he arrived at Anfield from Porto.

Apparently, the word from the forward’s camp is that either Liverpool extend his contract with improved terms or allow him to leave this summer. The club, on the other hand, have remained quite relaxed about the situation and have already officially rebuffed approaches from both Bayern and Barcelona regarding the player’s potential transfer.

It seems quite evident that the Liverpool hierarchy have no interest in offering Díaz a new contract. Does this mean they are waiting for an offer big enough to break any resistance to selling? Probably so. If that does not come, they appear willing to let the player run his contract down and leave in 2027, when he will be 30.

Below, we look at the numbers behind the 28-year-old’s time at Anfield so far and why the club are relaxed about his situation regardless of what happens.

Availability not a problem, output perhaps so!

Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Díaz has started 60 of Liverpool’s 76 league games, making a further 10 appearances from the bench. In the 2022/23 campaign, a serious knee injury sustained in October sidelined him for six months, restricting him to just 17 league appearances.

So, availability and the trust of both Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot haven’t been an issue for the Colombian during his time at the club. One thing you can never fault him for is his work rate and his willingness to keep going, even when it’s not his or the team’s day. That, at the very least, is what’s expected of any player hoping to last more than a season in a Liverpool shirt.
